kchgardens: Hi, my 5year old son and I have just watched the episode of Arthur in which you feature. Once it ended I told him that I have several of your books, he then patted my arm sympathetically and replied "I'm sorry Mummy, but he's not real! Its just a story!" I tried to explain but he remained adamant. He still believes in the Tooth Fairy and Father Christmas though!

Best ask ever. Thank you!

Me 2 I’m Talkin’ U2 To U Too

Andy Daly had the idea of making a U2 podcast way before the creation of U Talkin’ U2 To Me? and now he finally is glad to present the very first episode of Me 2 I’m Talkin’ U2 To U Too! Joining Andy this week is Amoeba Records employee Allison Gondry to discuss U2’s first album Boy. They’ll talk about how they first were introduced to U2, the origin of the album’s title, and tease the next episode all about October. Later, Traci Reardon arrives to offer advice to her Twitter followers on how to make someone like BBQ sauce and much more in her recurring segment, “Help Me, Rhonda.”

‘Inside Llewyn Davis Soundtrack’ by Various
I didn’t really like Inside Llewyn Davis that much as a movie but the music is actually super good. The whole soundtrack is my jam right now.

A little table to how to get rid of all that negative self-talk. We have to learn look at the good in situations too, instead of dwelling on things we can’t change- because you know what? We may not be able to change what is happening but we CAN change how we view it!

Anonymous: How far do you think someone can go with a career in writing, without having post secondary education under their belt? Do you need to go to school before you get a chance writing in the big leagues?

jimzub:

I went to college for Art/Animation, not writing. The only writing-related material I took were standard college-level English courses and a bit of script writing as part of a Film course I took.

No one has ever asked me for my writing ‘credentials’ or checked to see if I have a degree in writing, and I doubt they ever will.

I teach at a post-secondary level now (Seneca College in Toronto) and I think education can be an important way to learn the craft and broaden your influences but it’s not an absolute requirement by any means.

90% of the time it’s about the work, not a degree.

FEBRUARY 24, 2015: The Toronto Comic Arts Festival (May 9-10, 2015) revealed today the official poster image for its 2015 Festival, by renowned graphic novelist and illustrator Charles Burns!

This poster, like all previous TCAF posters, will be printed in advance of the show and be available for purchase at the event and at Festival Sponsor The Beguiling books and art. Final design will differ slightly. TCAF Posters from 2003-2014 are available for purchase online from The Beguiling Books & Art.

ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR

CHARLES BURNS grew up in Seattle in the 1970s. His work rose to prominence in Art Spiegelman’s Raw in the mid-1980s and took off from there, in an extraordinary range of comics and projects, from Iggy Pop album covers to the latest ad campaign for Altoids. In 1992 he designed the sets for Mark Morris’s restaging of The Nutcracker (renamed The Hard Nut) at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. He illustrated covers for Time, The New Yorker, and The New York Times Magazine. He was also tapped as the official cover artist for The Believer magazine at its inception in 2003.

Burns’ graphic novel Black Hole has been critically acclaimed, receiving Eisner, Harvey, and Ignatz comics-industry awards. Black Hole has been adopted to the course curriculum of several classes at the University of Toronto (and in institutions across North America). In 2014 Burns completed his newest project, the X’ed Out graphic novel trilogy, consisting of X’ed Out, The Hive, and Sugar Skull. Burns will attend The Toronto Comic Arts Festival 2015 as a Featured Guest of TCAF, in celebration of this work. Charles Burns lives in Philadelphia with his wife and two daughters.
