A friend told me they fired themselves from comics & illustration work ....

sammyborras:

A friend of mine stopped doing the small press comics circuit in 2015, and it’s made me think a lot about how we need to be more careful about ‘encouragement posts online’. You might say something that would kick yourself into action, but there’s actually people out there who don’t respond in the same way, and it can actively discourage them. So yeah, I think it’s important to tell you about what happened (because other wise you’d just never find out about this stuff, right?) ….

So it started with arguments over fan art which caused the scene to get sour and hostile to new people. To me it highlighted a divide in attitudes. Relaxed ‘zinesters’ who believe in using self publishing to make whatever you want, whatever the quality VS. those pursuing a professional career, striving for the very best they can achieve and ultimately trying to use self publishing as a stepping stone to greater things.

At that time people would say things along the lines of ‘if you can’t afford to table at a convention without the fanart, then your work isn’t good enough to be here.’ … I think the thought behind this was to encourage people to ‘STEP UP YOUR SMALL PRESS GAME.’ but it’s completely without context right? You know if you’re not trying your best and it’s ok to tell yourself to up your own game. But we’re all coming from wildly different backgrounds! You don’t necessarily know who is working full time with 3 kids and drawing comics whenever they possibly can, and who is working part time with no responsibilities to anyone. What if I’m already regularly crashing from the work load and I can’t work any harder? my comics could technically be at a high standard, but the ideas aren’t mainstream enough (we are self publishing them in the small press after all.)  (this is also ignoring that both comics and illustration industries have fashion styles which change over time - you could just be unlucky with how you prefer to draw)

My friend responded to the situation with ‘well if I’m not good enough, I guess I’ll stop self publishing comics and zines then. I’d be making a loss without the fanart anyway.’ … my heart broke a little bit.

And this unhealthy ‘STEP UP YOUR GAME’ attitude towards work seems to pop all all the time online. People beating themselves up over not working hard enough. Kicking themselves loudly in public (online) and everyone agreeing with them. Reinforcing this weird idea that we could all always be doing more and that we definitely have to become some sort of crazy obsessed comics machine that does nothing else. Sell your soul to the comics gods or GTFO.

I’m actually guilty of doing this myself. I’ve mellowed out over the years though. When I was being treated for an unrelated anxiety disorder, my therapist pointed out that I was regularly working myself up if I thought any amount of time had been wasted rather than used efficiently. We’re people, not machines and we don’t have to work all day every day, it’s perfectly ok to take breaks. In fact it’s probably healthier to regularly take scheduled breaks than to work until you burn out.

My friend read some more posts recently which have lead them to quitting freelance comics and illustration work altogether. Which is just crazy because they’re very skilled at drawing (better than I can draw). I think we need to remember that you can’t just write something like ‘be prepared to give every ounce of your being to your comic project or you may as well just give up right now’ without considering that someone with a different disposition to you might read the same thing and think ‘Welp. OK. Bye.’

Keep kicking yourself into action if it works for you, but consider whether or not you need to air it publicly? And choose words carefully if you do decide it’s important to you to share it.

I really hope that my friend ends up coming back to the small press world some time in the future. But until then - please be kind to each other - AND TAKE BREAKS <3
Sammy

Hasn’t Mark Hamill been playing The Joker for 20 shitzillion years? How come he never got “consumed” by the role?

cause hes not an ass

seriously–that’s one of my favorite things. while jared leto is over there talking about how playing a PG-13 Joker has irreparably turned him into a dark and twisted psychopath, mark hamill, who has played the meanest and scariest versions of the joker for years, is running around being an actual ray of human sunshine.

nothing makes you be a dick. you decide to be a dick, then find an excuse.

What’s wrong with Tim Burton’s terrible explanation for why he excludes people of color from his movies? Oh, let us count the ways

“Nowadays, people are talking about [on-screen diversity] more,” Burton told the site. “Things either call for things, or they don’t.” So, a movie either calls for diversity in its casting or it doesn’t? How does one decide when a film calls for casting nonwhite people?

“It’s a nod to Trayvon, no question, Trayvon Martin and people like him. People like Jordan Davis, a kid who was shot because of the perception that he was a danger. When you’re a black man in a hoodie, all of a sudden you’re a criminal. That’s something we shouldn’t have to deal with, but we do. It’s a double standard. We can’t cover our head when it’s cold and raining because God forbid someone sees us and puts our life in danger. We wanted to pay homage to that—it’s not something we were shying away from.” ~ Colter

Luke Cage was filmed in 2014, at the same time Eric Garner was killed, and Colter spoke about the lack of justice that was served.

“When we were filming this, there were different things going on, Eric Garner, the policemen were acquitted. No one was brought to justice. There was no handing out of any sentence. There are a couple of other things that happened during the time we were filming. We were watching the news, and it was always someone being shot who was unarmed, and there is no justification for it. It’s mind-boggling.”

Holy shit Netflix originals. Jessica Jones approaches mental illness and rape culture. Luke cage going for black lives matter. This is awesome.

UGH, both candidates SUCK, fuck this election, I’m voting for Gary Joh--

tessacrowley:

Today in Tessa’s Fun Fact Did-You-Know Politics Corner, Gary Johnson is awful and do not vote for him!

The Problem: You don’t like Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton! You want to vote Third Party!
The Bigger Problem: America is a two-party system by sheer mathematical inevitability. Any vote for a third-party candidate is going to accomplish nothing more statistically significant than drawing votes away from one of the other main candidates.

The Problem: Fuck that!!!!!!! If enough people just VOTE or even WRITE-IN Gary Johnson–
The Bigger Problem: 70% of people do not even know who he is. There are less than 40 days until the election. There is no mathematical way he can win.

The Problem: Okay, fine, so Gary Johnson can’t win. Whatever, right? This is a protest vote!
The Bigger Problem: Sure, whatever. I hope you’re cool with Donald Trump being president, though. Because Gary Johnson, in the vast majority of cases, is taking away votes from her, not Trump.

The Problem: Well, I WOULD have voted Democrat, if Bernie Sanders won! I refuse to vote for SHILLARY!!!!!!!
The Bigger Problem: Switching loyalty from Bernie Sanders to Gary Johnson is like trading your morning coffee routine for a crippling crystal meth addiction. Gary Johnson is a political nightmare shit-for-brains.

Bernie Sanders built his platform on raising taxes, free college education, investing in clean energy and preserving the ecosystem, federalized healthcare, and raising the minimum wage. All of those things I listed are things Gary Johnson opposes.

Gary Johnson wants a consumption tax, which among other things would drastically lower taxes across the board and likely have little effect on the wealthy.

Gary Johnson wants to eliminate the Department of Education, which, for those of you playing at home, is not a good way to get free college.

Gary Johnson thinks a free market will protect the environment, because if there’s one thing we know about capitalism, it really cares about human life and its use of resources.

Gary Johnson has blocked Medicaid/Medicare expansion at every turn as governor.

And of course, Gary Johnson wants to eliminate the concept of the minimum wage, because capitalism is also really good at treating its workers fairly.

Not only is Gary Johnson nothing like Bernie Sanders, he is actively opposed to much of his platform. Most of those links up there? Those are to his own website.

The Problem: B-b-but… Hillary’s… emails… Benghazi… servers!!!!!
The Bigger Problem: Hillary Clinton has her flaws, no question. It would be a disservice to everyone to ignore her checkered past. But likewise, it would be a much greater disservice to ignore her many years of impeccable and progressive public service. There’s a reason Bernie Sanders, Barack Obama, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, virtually every sitting Democrat, and many sitting Republicans have endorsed her. There’s a reason she was a senator, a Secretary of State, and it is not because she is some Disney supervillain. It is because she is intelligent, competent, and has been preparing to be president since she was 12.

I know it leaves a bad taste in your mouth not having a presidential candidate to ~believe~ in with your ~heart and soul~, but a presidential election is not an uncompromising demand for perfection, it is a choice between two people, and it is your duty to choose the one who can do the job better.

That person is Hillary Clinton.

REMINDER THAT LAIKA’S FIRST FILM SOLELY PRODUCED BY THEIR STUDIO HAD TWO FEMALE CHARACTERS AS THEIR ANTAGONIST AND PROTAGONIST WHO, BY SOME FORM OF DEVIL MAGIC, HAVE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FACES

REMINDER THAT LAIKA’S SECOND FILM NOT ONLY CONSISTED OF A CAST WITH FOUR CENTRAL FEMALE CHARACTERS BUT INCLUDED AN ENTIRE TOWN OF DIVERSE CITIZENS OF VARYING RACE, GENDER, AND AGE. LIKE A NORMAL TOWN HAS.

REMINDER THAT LAIKA’S THIRD FILM FEATURED SAME SEX COUPLES IN THEIR TEASER TRAILER

REMINDER THAT THIS IS ALL STOP-MOTION SO EVERY CHARACTER WAS DESIGNED, MODELED, SCULPTED, RIGGED, AND EVEN HAD TINY CLOTHES SEWED FOR THEM.

also reminder that they make chump change compared to disney who whines and cries that in all their years of experience they can’t handle the prospect of animating a girl with a face different than the rest and that it’s “too hard” because only females can express such a wide range of emotions that it makes them difficult to animate

if a studio with 20-30 years of experience can manage this then SURELY an established studio with NEAR 100 YEARS of experience can maybe, just maybe, include a female that ISN’T a part of their formula

LAIKA !

Also paranormal had a canonically gay guy in it just saying

I love Laika and they’ve been great at creating beautiful movies with diverse casts but Disney does have a long history of making movies about women and even women of different enthnicities like Mulan, Pocahontas, Jasmine and Tatiana from Princess and the Frog. They are doing better now than ever with Vanellope and Sergent Calhoun, who were totally different in Wreck it Ralph, Big Hero 6 which featured Asian, black and hispanic characters (dispite the whitewashing of the source material) and now Moana which feaures a Polynesian woman of colour. That one animator’s comments from a few years ago were kind of lame but if you look at the big picture, they’re actually doing really well in my opinion.

What people don't expect from INFPs

famousinfps:

• INFPs can be downright cruel, despite their strong morals and care for others. Because they can people read so well, they are able to find people’s biggest sore spots easily and won’t hesitate to attack them with their words.
•INFPs are EXTREMELY protective. Not just in a motherly, “oh I love them” way. They will choose someone and then protect them with everything they have until their last breath.
•Although INFPs are much less sexual than some other types like ISFPs or ISTPs, for example, they are often seen as the “kinkiest” type.
•INFPs are one of the types most likely to be depressed along with ENFPs, INTPs, INFJs and ISFPs, but they are much less likely to commit suicide than both of those types.
•INFPs are also the least hedonistic of the types who are most likely to be depressed
•INFP/ENTJ friendships are actually some of the most successful, surprisingly
•INFPs are often liars. Nearly every INFP lies more than they’d like to admit. It comes from their deep imagination and their acting skills
•Isabella Briggs-Myer has actually stated that INFPs make good scientists, along with INTPs and INTJs. Her father was a scientist and an INFP.
•Isabella Briggs-Myer was an INFP, herself.
