Toronto Indie Art Market is now accepting vendor applications for our August 21st Summer Sunset Market, an evening market taking place at the Gladstone Hotel from 7pm - 11pm.
This event is in the Gladstone Ballroom only and will be free admission. Due to increased venue rental fees and free admission, tables are priced at $45/3ft spot or $90/6ft spot. A VERY few 4ft spaces are available for $60. While the official hours are 7 - 11pm, vendors will have the option of remaining set up until midnight if they choose to do so.
All vendors are welcome to submit an application for this event, however vendors who have been accepted for July will go to the bottom of the list for acceptance.
To submit an application, please visit the Toronto Indie Arts Market website.
Hey folks! Just a reminder that this call for vendors ends at the end of this month.
Those are good table prices but Thursday night from 7pm-11pm are weird hours. We’d probably do better at the December 13th Holiday Small Press & Literary Festival.

faithfire-writes: Do you have any suggestions for how to outline a novel? I feel like if I try to write it without outlining it first, I lose my motivation and everything sounds like crap.
Anonymous said to characterandwritinghelp: I’m trying to start writing a book and I have a vague idea of the plot but I can’t figure out how to arrange my thoughts in the right order so that the story flows better. Could you help me out?
Anonymous said to characterandwritinghelp: I’m personally very bad at organizing myself and my thoughts on paper. I usually lose my notes or forget they exist, and I was wondering if you had any resources online that I could use to keep track of my notes, short stories, etc. Thanks!
I AM ALL ABOUT OUTLINES, MY FRIENDS. Things to remember when you outline:
- It does not have to make sense. Your outline is for you and no one else. My outlines usually contain a mess of words thrown down in a rough approximation of sentences. The important thing is that you understand it.
- Use every tool at your disposal. Get highlighters and sticky notes to help you track story arcs. Use a procrastination sheet and a bookmark word to keep track of things that need extra work. Sketch things out on a timeline or a mind map. Nothing is stupid if it helps you get your story written.
- Do not be afraid to change things. The beauty of outlining is that you can take a look at your story as a whole. If you outline it all and take a step back to see something that looks like it no longer works, change it (but do not get rid of it, paste it on a clipboard somewhere and squirrel it away for later).

They Might Be Giants have a very special gift for you http://www.theymightbegiants.com/firstalbumlive/
We respectfully request that all you fine folks on tumblr reblog this free offering. We would sincerely appreciate you spreading the good word of this project.
They Might Be Giants’ first album, or “pink album,” was a turning point for both the band and for the burgeoning world of indie rock. Performing in downtown NYC clubs, the band had become a fixture on the East Village scene where performance art and music flowed together in a vivid late night club scene. In those earlier years, the band was making recordings for their Dial-A-Song service and their demos were actively passed around town. While the album’s release in late 1986 was met with raves from critics (including the rare “A” rating from the Village Voice’s Robert Christgau), with no major label push or immediate radio interest, it seemed destined to settle comfortably into the Miscellaneous T section within a number of months. All that would change quickly when the band collaborated with video director Adam Bernstein, on a series of original clips that would get serious play on MTV…

I did things in my 30s that were ignored by the world, that could have been quickly labeled a failure. Here’s a classic example; in 1974 I did a movie called Phantom of the Paradise. Phantom of the Paradise, which was a huge flop in this country. There were only two cities in the world where it had any real success: Winnipeg, in Canada, and Paris, France. So, okay, let’s write it off as a failure. Maybe you could do that.
But all of the sudden, I’m in Mexico, and a 16-year-old boy comes up to me at a concert with an album - a Phantom of the Paradise soundtrack- and asks me to sign it. I sign it. Evidently I was nice to him and we had a nice little conversation. I don’t remember the moment, I remember signing the album (I don’t know if I think I remember or if I actually remember). But this little 14 or 16, whatever old this guy was… Well I know who the guy is now because I’m writing a musical based on Pan’s Labyrinth; it’s Guillermo del Toro.
The work that I’ve done with Daft Punk it’s totally related to them seeing Phantom of the Paradise 20 times and deciding they’re going to reach out to this 70-year-old songwriter to get involved in an album called Random Access Memories.
So, what is the lesson in that? The lesson for me is being very careful about what you label a failure in your life. Be careful about throwing something in the round file as garbage because you may find that it’s the headwaters of a relationship that you can’t even imagine it’s coming in your future.

This variant is for that dude on reddit that whined that Bane wasn’t “comics Bane”.
PS - In 2012, the Dark Knight Rises and Wreck-It Ralph came out 4 months apart, and I created the original a couple weeks after Ralph was released. So that should explain why the original was rendered as movie Bane and not comic Bane, but nevertheless, here’s comic-Bane
Also: CHARACTER UNLOCKED! Build-It Bruce! HE CAN BUILD IT (with millions of dollars)!
Hope you’re happy now, “android151”.

I had the pleasure to spend this year working on Gravity Falls as a revisionist and storyboard artist with an insanely talented team. Check out the second season airing August 1st, everyone worked really hard on it!
YAY, we can’t wait!

Just put in the time, and don’t be too precious about things. Work with your friends. And maybe, eventually, you’ll get paid. (Laughs) If you’re doing it for the money, then just forget it. When you sit at your computer and think, I’m going to write something really political and interesting, it’s like, Okay, good luck with that!
People quit because it’s really hard. It’s hard to not have a house, hard not to have money, hard not to have insurance, hard not to be married, hard to have your parents ask you every day what you’re going to do with your life. It’s hard to wait tables while you’re doing improv shows. It’s hard to get up onstage and bomb. It’s hard to lug your props around everywhere. It’s hard to submit things that get rejected.
It’s not easy! Good people make it look easy, and a lot of people want to do it because they think it looks easy. If you stick around, if you’re a good collaborator, if you’re open to new ideas and you keep trying, then you’ll find there’s a lot of different ways you can work as a writer.

every achievement in cinema history has led up to this moment
#that time that michael jordan retired from basketball to play baseball #and then was bad at baseball so went back to basketball #and in order to celebrate his return to basketball #we made a movie in which he teams up with 50 year old cartoon characters #to defeat the space aliens who magically stole the mojo of other famous basketball players #and planned to kidnap these 50 year old cartoon characters #so the cartoon characters who literally never played basketball in any of their cartoons #were like clearly the only way to settle this is with a game of basketball #and just when all hope seems lost #bill murray who has literally only been in one other scene in the movie #shows up completely without explanation #and no one questions it #and doesn’t even do anything to help the team like he literally just shows up to pass the ball to michael #and then michael jordan slam dunks the ball from half court to win the game #and someone in hollywood read that script #and was like yes perfect no changes need to be made let’s get this project going #i don’t believe in god #but i do believe in space jam
