Tips for dealing with Designers:
1: Don’t belittle the skill it takes to make designs.
2: Don’t assume you can do what we spent years trainings to do just because you took one class in high school or college way back when. (unless you’re a protege)
3: Don’t expect good results from vauge, unrealistic requests.
4: Don’t try to worm your way out of paying when its clear you can. (charities excluded)
Now I realize some people not might realize what they are saying is rude and I am willing to forgive your ignorance, but if you talk like this to a designer you are a jerk.
For the folks over at Clientsfromhell.net whose horror stories have inspired this comic.
This is too true.

klumpypotamus: What kind of qualifications are expected/desired when recruiting for a TV show?
I’ve received this question from numerous people so seriously, here’s what I would say you’d need:
1) Skills! Learn to draw really well (most important). Study those basics - anatomy, perspective, composition, tone. Then depending on what you’d like to specialize in, learn to tell a story, learn to design, learn color. (Some people get around this because they’re incredibly funny, but don’t assume you can count on that.)
2) Be a nice person. I don’t want to spend my days working with jerks. We have to make shows as a team on tight schedules and we rely on each other to be professional, to make deadlines, and to excite each other creatively.
3) Don’t give up. If it’s what you want, keep trying to get there. You never know when new shows might be starting up, so timing is important.
The best thing I would say to do (beyond getting a good art education) is to make your stuff and put it online. Keep making stuff. A lot of people owe their jobs to someone liking their online work. That’s your absolute best bet right now, plus you get the satisfaction of actually making something rather than waiting around for someone else to “let” you.
He forgot to add that you must master sheepherding and under-water basket weaving. But other than that these are some pretty okay tips.

Whenever I talk to people about putting their stuff online a lot of the time they are reluctant to do so because it’s not “ready”. But the sooner you start building a reputation online the better because these things take a long time and are crucial for self promotion. People have gotten jobs through Twitter and Tumblr!

Be careful what you wish for.
Wow what I never realized the colors were inverted
You’d think I would have noticed that
That’s the point. The world Coraline lives in is supposed to be boring and gray, but the people are what give it life and purpose. In the Other Mother’s world the people are plastic puppets where she pulls the strings because it presumably changes for every child she takes, but the world around them is bright and colorful for the purpose of enticing the children to stay… before they notice the inhabitants are nothing but dust.
There are reasons I love this movie so much! I mean, the book is fantastic, but the things Laika did with the visuals are just incredible. It’s such a beautiful world.

I couldn’t pick which one I liked better.
Something more embarrassing than being beaten by Bo;
Being beaten by Bo with a rapier.
(psss yes I know rapiers don’t work like that, think of it as a shard of super sharp bone or something.)
I posted this pretty late last night, so here it is again. I’m still super happy with this.
These are all great. The middle one is the easiest to look at and the one of the left is the most psychedelic. So I think my favourite is the one on the right. It’s still got that psychedelic quality but it’s less intense.
