“Master glassblower and stained glass artist Loren Stump in California has wowed the internet with an extraordinary display of virtuosity. He created a “loaf” of glass, called murrine, out of carefully layered glass rods that, when sliced, reveal a painstakingly detailed work of art in cross-section.

“The most impressive thing about his work is that the resulting image can only be seen in its entirety after the murrini is cut…”

I was the first of the Potter actors to learn to drive. I passed my test at the second time of trying. On the set, there’d always be a lot of talk about cars among the cast, although Daniel Radcliffe never joined in. He’s never been into cars at all. My first ambition was to become an ice-cream man, which is why I bought the Bedford van. Not long after I first got it, I pulled into a pub to do a U-turn and there were eight kids with their pocket money out, hoping to buy a 99 or whatever. But I had nothing to give them. I’ve learnt my lesson since then. I keep my van well stocked. It’s got a proper machine that dispenses Mr Whippy ice cream and I buy my lollies wholesale – 50 for a tenner – so I never run short. I’m not allowed to sell my merchandise. I’d need a licence for that. I tend to avoid July and August, but the rest of the year I’ll drive around the local villages and if I see some kids looking like they’re in need of ice creams, I’ll pull over and dish them out for free. They’ll say, “Ain’t you Ron Weasley?” And I’ll say, “It’s strange, I get asked that a lot.” The van often comes in useful. I drove it up to the set on the last day of filming on Harry Potter. The cast and crew were having a barbecue and I supplied the lollies and ice creams.’

If You Like Tezuka Crossed With Moomin, Read “Beautiful Darkness”

Real talk.

Vehlmann and Keracoest is one of my favorite comic teams of all time. Everything they do is GOLD. It’s pretty rare that French comics get an English version. Super rare. You guys get about 0.02% of what we produce. but everything in that 0.02% is amazing. So, yes, read Beautiful Darkness. It will knock your socks off and lead you to questioning your humanity. For reals.

adeadhamsterblog-deactivated202: Heya, Ovens! I dunno if you remember following me (I'm the dude whose shiba sticker you bought :)) but I've been considering submitting to Slipshine for a few years now and I think I am finally in the right mindset and workflow to go for it. Would you happen to have any words of advice? I would appreciate it greatly, but no pressure! Thanks for reading!

chipperwhale:

I remember! (I love the sticker, my tablet makes me smile every time I see it now) Some things Slipshine is looking for;  proof you can commit to a comic, experience is a must, having a webcomic or been in anthologies helps. Sex friendly work is a given.

If you’ve never completed a 10 page story, I’d say don’t apply. Pushing yourself to draw 10-15 pages every other month is completely doable, but I know from experience it takes time to get into that work flow. When I started comics I couldn’t even draw 5 pages with out losing motivation and giving up. That’s why I originally started drawing Effort comics. It was to challenge myself and experiment with the comic format. Also having a long running webcomic for free on the internet is a great way of proving to future employers what type of worker you are. I’ll give a ton of credit to Effort comics for getting the jobs I’ve had over the years.

I’m not saying you need a webcomic to be hired, but it sure does help. I’m not in charge of hiring, but there’s some opinions I have on what I’d like to see more of on Slipshine. I’ll keep it to myself.

…I’m probably never going to submit to slipshine but this is good advice for getting comics jobs in general.

king-of-carrot-flowers: Since for you both draw and write your graphic novels, do you have a preference to writing or to drawing or can you not separate the two?

itswalky:

radiomaru:

Writing and drawing are inseparable for me. They both are working toward the same goal. I treasure them equally and also i despise them equally

Trufax: I have trouble distinguishing writing from drawing.  I write by drawing.

Me too! Like… I never write prose because it feels unnatural without pictures and I rarely draw illustrations without putting some amount of thought into the story or characters behind them.

signsoflifeonearth: I'm a writer, or trying to be one, anyway. I was just wondering if you ever had moments of crippling doubt that made you want to give up, and if so, how did you get past them?

radiomaru:

About every 3rd question I get is a variation on this. How do I get past self doubt in order to create the work I envision myself creating?

There is no answer to this question.

Keep trying until you can’t, then keep trying some more, then maybe take a short snack break, then keep trying some more.

We might not ever get there but we have to keep trying.

That’s the lesson at the end of Scott Pilgrim cause it’s all I knew to tell you.
